Years from now, when you reflect on the day you put your life in vaguely labeled boxes and headed west with the nicest boy you’d ever met, don’t forget about this:
The sun was giving everything one last warm caress before it turned in for the night. You felt the significance of the moment buzzing through you. You thought about how sad it would be to lose this feeling of youth and impulsiveness.
You both silently hurtled towards an uncertain future on a southern highway. You knew that someday you wouldn’t be able to do things like this anymore. You felt a little sad but mostly nostalgic for something that you hadn’t said goodbye to yet.
You spent the whole drive trying to find the perfect song. Nothing was good enough. Or maybe everything was good enough and you just couldn’t choose.
Eventually you turned off the radio, rolled down the windows and let the wind sing you to sleep until it was your turn to drive.
When she packed up to leave, she knew that she was saying goodbye to something important, which was not that bad, in a way, because it meant that at least you had said hello to it to begin with…
